According to one study, young people who have good relationships with teachers in early childhood are less likely to behave antisocially during adolescence.
Experts at the University of Edinburgh investigated the experience of 1483 adolescents whose teachers changed between the ages of 9 and 10.
They identified a pair of young people with similar backgrounds and influence, but who reported different experiences of teacher change. Each pair had one young man who had a relatively good relationship with the teacher, but a relatively poor relationship with the teacher, but was otherwise very similar.
The researchers then compared the levels of misconduct and violence in each pair at three levels: 13, 15, and 17. The analysis was performed on 208 pairs aged 13 years, 235 pairs aged 15 years, and 194 pairs aged 17 years.
We used the data we collected when the children were 11 years old to assess their relationship with the teacher. Participants also responded to a questionnaire that included examples of aggressive and antisocial behavior such as home theft, shoplifting, and vandalism at three age levels.
Researchers found that people at the age of 11 with a high quality teacher-student relationship reported less delinquency until the age of 17 than those with a poor teacher-student relationship.
Young people with good teacher relationships also reported that they were 17 years old and not aggressive and violent.
